Poll Dancing

Everyone has an opinion, and today you get to give me yours. :)  My one request (besides keeping it civil and family-friendly in the comments) is that you either vote on all three polls or none of them.

Regarding works of fiction...

Fwiw, the poll on Christian fiction was included to help me interpret the other results, not to start a holy war.  Play nice. ;)

  1. I love profanity. I'm not going to lie. But it has its place. I wouldn't expect that much profanity in a romance novel but in a good mystery or thriller where you've got police--I expect some profanity. I don't think you should have it for the sake of having it. It should be well-placed but I am definitely all for it. I tend to read within my own genre mostly but I will read a romance or fantasy novel or a historical romance now and then to mix things up. I think a good book is a good book and even if I don't typically read in that genre, if it is well-written and well-executed it will still appeal to me. I like to get out of my comfort zone now and then.

    1. Profanity can definitely characterize if used well.

  2. I don't think I've read much Christian fiction, although I've read a lot of Christian non-fiction.

  3. Hi Melissa--

Profanity doesn't offend me unless it's gratuitous in nature. It has to fit the character, setting, and be appropriate to the story.

The same also holds true for me for sex (in literature, perhaps in life? ;)). Of course, I'm assuming the specific genre may dictate just how explicit the sexual scenes are. My guess is that certain genres are read with the expectation of titillation!

I find the little Christian fiction I've read to be a bit too syrupy for my tastes. Like Alex, I've read quite a bit of Christian non-fiction but can go on overload with that easily as well.

  4. You know me. The only things I won't write are JC/GD. Anything else is fair game, as long as it isn't gratuitous. :)

  5. You're missing an option for reading genre fiction -- I'm not sure if you consider mainstream to be literary or not.

    1. Sorry for the confusion. My goal with the third poll was to measure CBA vs ABA, for lack of a better description.

  6. I'm a fan of leaving it up to the imagination.

  7. I agree with Carrie and Shannon. I read mostly genre fiction (I so lOVE anything paranormal). I don't personally cuss/curse (can never figure out which one to use - Grammar Police Monday…hint…hint). Though, I do have character's who use profanity.

    1. Either one is correct. :)

Cuss - origin: 1765–75, Americanism ; variant of curse.

  8. I am a fan of the four letter word. Wish I weren't. However, I don't like it to be every other word. I think it dumbs down the work. I also think that language needs to fit the character. I don't think every character needs to cuss, not even in YA. I taught freshmen for 19 years, and I had a lot of students who did not cuss. It does exist.
