IWSG - Two Years And Counting

This is my Insecure Writers Support Group post for September. For more information about the group, click the link or see the bottom of this post.

Alex's awesome co-hosts this month are:
Chemist Ken, SL Hennessy, Michelle Wallace,
and Joylene Nowell Butler!

Please visit their blogs and say thank you.
And check Alex's blog, too.
He has a special announcement.

I can't believe it's already the second anniversary of IWSG. I've been a member for over a year and I've watched it grow, a lot.

Not that anyone cares, but for nostalgia's sake, I've linked a couple of my past posts. This was my post on IWSG's one-year anniversary. And this was probably my best IWSG post to date...my funniest, at least.

I don't want to dampen everyone's spirits on such a happy day by droning on about my troubles. (I'm in virtually the same spot I was at the beginning of the summer--life getting in the way of my writing, making me wonder if I'll ever manage to finish and publish a book.) So I'll focus on something positive.

My husband works for an office furniture company. He occasionally gets his hands on used items being taken out of inventory. Last week, I got a new (to me) writing desk.

It has a few scuffs, but it's definitely better and better-looking than the plastic folding table I was using before. I may not get much writing done at my fancy new desk, but I can hope. Right?

Before I go, let me throw in a shameless plug for Follow Fest, a platform-building bloghop for writers that I'm hosting later this month. If anyone wants more information, tell them to click on the blog button at the top of my right sidebar. It takes you directly to the information page. There's also a link in the left sidebar under Page Index.

Thanks for stopping by. :)

IWSG is the brainchild of Alex J. Cavanaugh. It's a monthly bloghop that offers a safe haven for writers to express their feelings and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. It's also a venue for offering support, both in the form of comments and positive posts. Writers of all kinds are welcome.

We 'meet' the first Wednesday of every month. If you're interested in learning more, click on the link above. And don't be intimidated by the size of the group. We're not expected to visit everyone on the list.

  1. Aloha:)

I chuckled when I saw your yesterday post, 'cos I knew *exactly* what happened:)

It is, however, very sweet of you to come back and comment again (I would have been, "I'm so done - checkmark checkmarked" :)

Ps... That is a fine looking desk, one worthy of producing many a best-seller, so go forth and multiply (sales, etc :)

  2. It's always nice to have a functional writing space. My desk is the top of an old coffee table on top of two wooden trestles. You won't find it in a furniture store, but it's functional. I'm sure you'll have a break through in your writing soon. (:

  3. Writing space is so important. I have a nice desk but still decide to write everywhere else (ie: on the couch on my lap now.) Happy IWSG Birthday!

  4. Hi! Wow, a real desk! Yippee! I still have the plastic folding table. Maybe someday! Happy IWSG Birthday!

  5. Congrats on the new desk! It looks very organized (for now). And I can totally relate to your writing life complications. You're not alone.

I'm so excited about the Follow Fest.

  6. I'm wanting my office back, much less a desk! It's pretty! Right now my desk is my lap and my bed. Life definitely intrudes on writing, but use it as a positive and write about it! LOL.

I'll check out your prior posts after I do a little IWSG visiting.

  7. It's nice to have a desk and dedicated space. I finally have an actual office, lol, but I remember the days of happily writing on a sofa.

  8. Awesome new desk! Sometimes just the promise of having someplace new to write can inspire us to write more :)

  9. The new desk looks great! I'm a little jealous, I don't have a designated writing spot. Maybe some day. :)

  10. Melissa, I have had a tough time finding a writing groove with all the stuff that is happening in my life. I feel like I'm just now coming up for air and rethinking my visions.

By the way, your desk is lovely and looks like it's perfect for you! Yay!

  11. This summer has been terrible for me as far as writing goes also. I've been working on the same stinking first chapter all summer, and I still don't know if I'm even close. God, I hate first chapters. I can't wait to move on to the meat of the story.

Funny, I have my own little office downstairs in the basement with my own desk, but it seems I do most of my work upstairs on my wife's computer. Drives her nuts.

  12. I have been a bit stuck... and I must write, but now I have this nagging feeling I need a new-ish desk too lol

Oh, and you are not dampening anyone, that's what we are here for ;) Hugs and desk envy and more hugs!

  13. Nice desk! Hope you get lots of writing time in soon.

  14. The working space makes such a difference. When we moved into this new house, I made my hubby get me a new desk, and not just any desk, a wrap around with a pull-out keyboard drawer and "stuff" station to the side so I could stack my notes, printer, industry books, etc. Then he forced me into the whole "dual monitor" set up. I feel like a total pro now--or at least my work station looks that way and inspires me to believe. Upward and onward, eh? ;)

  15. I never understood the power of the proper desk until the kids bought me one with the platform for the monitor on the wrong side.

Hope your writing soars with the new desk.

  16. I want a desk!!!!!!! I write on the couch, LOL...

It's beautiful. And I hope we can both break through soon! I'm still trying to break out of my summer funk too. :)

  17. Wow, you're way nicer than I am!! I appreciate your positive attitude and lack of venting... because I seem to see IWSG as a venting opportunity sometimes ;) I DO hear your on time constraints and worrying if you'll ever finish - I always feel the same way. Just keep carving time out for yourself, and it'll happen. It always does- and we're rooting for you!

  18. Hooray for the new desk! *confetti cannon*

  19. Love the new desk! And it was fun to read your old posts.

Looking forward to Follow Fest. :)

  20. That is a hundred times better than a folding table! Nice of him to bring it home for you.

  21. A new, beautiful desk... how fun! Maybe it's a good sign of better writing days to come. I hope so! Enjoy.

  22. A new desk is so nice! I need to get a new one at some point because mine's not quite doing what I need it to do. I'll have to look around though.

  24. Nice desk! Everyone needs a spot and how exciting to have a new one. Especially one that doesn't fold up and wander away if someone needs it.

  25. I wish I would have seen your post from last year, then I might have known about Save The Cat earlier :) It was a good post, regardless, so thank you :)

    Snazzy looking desk, too.

  26. Awesome desk! So clean... and shiny! :D I'm going to sign up for the fest. :)

  27. Hi, Melissa,

Thanks for hosting and help create the new IWSG website! How cool...

i would love to join your blogfest, but keeping up for me these days is very taxing.... I know you understand.... Thanks so much for your kind words at my blog today!

  28. Lovely desk! Wishing you many productive hours with it!

  29. Melissa, could I borrow your husband? I'm resurfacing my faux granite counter top and I'm having a devil of a time. After a week, I finally sanded everything I'd done off. I'm taking a break and hope to tackle it on Monday. Honestly, every time I go near the thing I make it worse. Big sigh.

    Nice desk!

  30. Nice desk. I'm sure you'll do some monumental writing there. Hang in there! :)

  31. Congratulations on your new desk! It looks really good. Better than the rock I use, hahaha. I'm sure you'll get your mood to write again. DRagon hugs!
