IWSG June - Shelf Life

This is my   Insecure Writers Support Group   post for June 2021. Alex's awesome co-hosts this month  are:    J Lenni Dorner,   Sarah Foster,   Natalie Aguirre,   Lee Lowery,   and  Rachna Chhabria! Please stop by their blogs and say thank you .  💻💻💻💻💻 June 2nd question - For how long do you shelve your first draft, before reading it and re-drafting? Is this dependent on your writing experience and the number of stories/books under your belt?

I'm alive

It's pretty bad when your writer friends start emailing you to ask if you're okay. I am. I've been a lousy blogger and an even lousier visitor, but that's because I'm drafting my next book.  In fact, I wrote over 1600 words yesterday. (I want out of healthcare really, really bad . :P) I hope you'll understand and extend me a little grace. I love you and I miss you. I'll visit as soon as I can.

Speed Writing (Eleventh hour help for all you NaNo people)

A few weeks ago, I tried something new, and it really sped up my drafting.  After reading about how--doing basically the same thing--Ava Jae over at Writability Won NaNoWriMo In 9 Days , I thought I'd post this for my writer friends who are struggling to make their word count. I typically write very clean, meaning I'm a picky polisher in my initial draft. It's closer to publish-ready than most, but it takes me forever. Besides research, the main thing that slows me down is coming up with fresh ways to describe emotion, movement, facial expression, etc.  I decided to try something different if I found myself really stuck. ( You know....when you sit there for twenty minutes , debating about a single phrase or word, and draw nothing but an icky cliche or a total mental blank. :P )   I started putting a note-to-self ( e.g. Show Harrison's outrage. ) or a cliched/bad version of what I was aiming for in brackets, and then letting go and moving on. I've left...

I made it two weeks in a row!

I know you guys are probably cursing me for flooding your inbox with posts this week, but I'm gonna throw in one more. I joined the dojo for NiNoWriMo (not to be confused with NaNo) for the month of February. I set a goal for myself of 1500 words a week, and —not only have I made my goal two weeks in a row—I've made the leaderboard both times, too.   That gives me the right to display this badge. *does happy dance* I'm glad I joined the dojo . The accountability combined with the fact I'm in the home stretch of the first draft of my WIP has given me the motivation I need to (finally!) make good, consistent progress.  Need a kick in the drafting, revision or querying pants? Check them out. :)
