Grammar Police Monday - Valuable Gems

It's time for more commonly confused words...

First on the list: appraise and apprise.
If you estimate the value of something, you appraise it.
When you inform someone of a situation, you apprise them.

Next: wonder vs wander:
If you think about something curiously, you wonder about it.
If you roam aimlessly, you wander.

Last: palate, palette and pallet.
Your palate can mean the roof of your mouth or your sense of taste.
A palette is a small board an artist uses to mix paint colors.
A pallet is a small or makeshift bed.

See you again soon. Thanks for visiting. :)

  2. Pallet is also a wooden platform freight is shipped or moved on.

Another pair I hear messed up in speech more than in writing is onto and unto.

  3. Apprise is such a cool word--must work that into a book somehow. WHEN I'm out of the Viking era, that is!

  7. I wonder about my wanderings as I apprise the situation. Should I appraise this gem with all the colours of the palette? It's not to my palate so I returned to my pallet...
Did I get it right? hehehe

  9. I caught the wonder/wander one on YouTube once, in the comments for a song I really like, where the commenter thought he was quoting the lyrics. I didn't want to be catty and correct him so I posted a comment that agreed with his statement but requoted the line... I'm such a grammar dork :-)

  12. Also--just joined your GFC so I can keep up with grammar mistakes! Perhaps you'd consider visiting me again and following my site for a dose of laughter?? My name appears on your GFC as Marcia Doyle instead of Menopausalmother, just to let you know! :-)
