This is my Insecure Writers Support Group post for April.
For more information about the group, see the bottom of this post.
Last but not least, I'd like to give a big thank you to Chemist Ken for posting my book cover today.
Happy IWSG. Thanks for stopping by. :)
We 'meet' the first Wednesday of every month. If you're interested in learning more, click on the link above. And don't be intimidated by the size of the group. We're not expected to visit everyone on the list.
For more information about the group, see the bottom of this post.
It's late Tuesday afternoon, and I'm just now writing my IWSG post.
That is so not like me. But my tardiness has a good reason.
If you hadn't already deduced from the countdown clock on my sidebar, I'm in the final stages of publishing my first book. Between coordinating guest posts, replying to blog comments, and putting the finishing touches on my debut, I barely know what day it is!
I'm too busy to be insecure. :P
That's not entirely true. Preparing my ms for the formatter—knowing I couldn't make any changes after that—was a panic-inducing task. I think I read my book four times in less than two weeks, combing it for awkward phrasing and errors.
Anyhow. A visiting blogger made a comment this week that reminded me of the times I wistfully watched (what seemed like all) my writer friends publish, wondering if it would ever be my turn.
If you're feeling that way, you might find this guest post reassuring. It describes some of the struggles I faced while writing Come Back and the time I spent honing my craft. Even for indies, publication doesn't happen overnight.

IWSG is the
brainchild of Alex J. Cavanaugh. It's a monthly bloghop that offers a
safe haven for writers to express their feelings and concerns without
fear of appearing foolish or weak. It's also a venue for offering
support, both in the form of comments and positive posts. Writers of all kinds are welcome.
We 'meet' the first Wednesday of every month. If you're interested in learning more, click on the link above. And don't be intimidated by the size of the group. We're not expected to visit everyone on the list.
Good luck with your book launch, Melissa!
ReplyDeleteI know what it feels like to watch writer friends publish, and wonder if it's ever going to be your turn, but you're absolutely right, the publishing process doesn't happen overnight, and everyone works at a different pace. It's silly to compare yourselves to others, really, because everyone has different circumstances.
Good luck with your April literary endeavors.

Thanks, Clare.
DeleteThe thing that makes it difficult is we don't see all the work that goes on behind the scenes, we just see the cover reveals and release announcements. No wonder it makes it seem fast and effortless.
Takes a while indeed, but good to be busy over bored
ReplyDeleteCongrats on what you've done thus far. Nothing happens overnight, believe me, I know. Just stay busy & keep at it.
ReplyDeleteYou think Tuesday is tardy? I was still adding the finishing touches to my IWSG post at 6 a.m. this morning. Good luck with your book.
ReplyDeleteTuesday is tardy? Oh. Um, yeah, I TOTALLY always have my post done waaaay before that! Or...no. No, I really don't. But I once again admire your organizational skills!! And I AM so glad it's your turn now, Melissa. It;s so well deserved, and I can't wait for May!
ReplyDeleteAgree with Liz, this turn is so well deserved. Enjoy your time! :)
ReplyDeleteMelissa - congrats!!! So exciting to get that first feather for your pub hat. :)
ReplyDeleteHey Melissa! Congratulations on getting your book published. That is totally awesome; I'm so very happy for you. :) I wanted to stop by and thank you for visiting my blog earlier this morning. This is my first time ever co-hosting this amazing group and the visit meant a lot. Lily-Eva
ReplyDeleteExcited for the upcoming release! :)
ReplyDeleteWow, congratulations on the upcoming release! Sounds like you are busy, in the best way :) Your book cover is beautiful, as well. Best of luck to you!
ReplyDeleteGood luck Melissa! I am really excited for your book release. Let me know if I can help out in any way.
ReplyDeleteHi human, Melissa,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I'd like to thank the ninja dude and this month's co-hosts for being part of that dedication for my human. IWSG aka "I Was Seeking Gary."
It's good how you've been revealing yourself. Um, it's good how you are going to have your first book pawblished! :)
Why do you humans always seem to refer to something set up as a "brainchild"?
Penny, the pawsitive host of the Alphabark Challenge, 2014!
Excited for your release after your long journey. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteYour world is about to change!
ReplyDeleteToo busy to be insecure is a good thing.
Right now I'm too busy to think.
How exciting! Big congrats and best of luck...almost published....eeeeeek!
ReplyDeleteThere's a lot involved with indie publishing, and you're doing a great job at tackling all of it!
ReplyDelete"I'm too busy to be insecure. :P"
ReplyDeleteYou sound like me, this month! LOL
I've seen your book a lot of places, Melissa! So happy for you and hope you're so excited that you don't have room for insecure thoughts.
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty crazy seeing it from the other side, eh? I'm wishing you cheese and a little sanity when you find a chance to breathe. Enjoy what moments you can!
ReplyDeleteCongrats! Your almost there and then you can start all over again!
ReplyDeleteI feel you about watching everyone around you get their book out there. Waiting. That seems to be the theme of publishing!
Good luck. Email me. I'd love to do an interview. authorshellyarkon@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteHugs and chocolate,
Shelly
I'm really excited for you, Melissa--and from everything I've read on the internet, I can't wait to read what you put out!!
ReplyDeleteIt's almost here! So cool to be down to the final tweaks and tasks. Someday that will be me. (I can only hope)
ReplyDeleteHow exciting! Almost there. :)
ReplyDeleteYay to being too busy to be insecure, Melissa!!
ReplyDeleteThis is such an exciting time for you, Melissa! Enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteYou thought Tuesday was tardy!? I'm so overwhelmed with A-Z that I can't even consider doing IWSG right now.
Not that I'm feeling secure or anything ... ;)
Fantastic job on that novel of yours! I can't wait to read it. :)
Congratulations on the publication! That is the carrot, after all. Well done. Love the cover!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your first publication! ^_^ I don't know if insecurities like this ever go away, but here's hoping your first book gives you no further reason to be insecure about it.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your upcoming book publication, Melissa! What an accomplishment. If only the publication date was also the time you could sit back and relax.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations and thanks for the pep talk and the link to the guest post. Very good! I'm glad you're excited. Sometimes it's easy to get caught up in the stress of it and forget the joy. You don't seem to have that problem! I liked the cover too, on Alex's blog...
ReplyDeleteSo excited for your first book, and I'm happy to help share (or anything else you need). Just let me know. Hitting publish is SO hard. I have a hard time saying it's done--that another edit wouldn't be necessary. I have a book (my third) coming out this month, so I totally understand. Actually, I should be finishing up my last edit now. ;-)
ReplyDeleteCheers to being too busy to be insecure! Congratulations on your upcoming release! :)
ReplyDeleteHey:)
ReplyDeleteSo, yes I am a slacker and never comment anymore, BUT if you need help on Launch Day (or before... or after... PLEASE count me in...:)
You have been such an awesome Blog Bud and I so owe you for all the support you've shown me these last couple of years :)
Put me in, Coach :)
Blogger needs to do like Facebook and put 'Like' buttons on the comments. Thanks, Mark! :D
