A Little Summer Fun

Caffe Maggieatto over at Just Get It Written gave me the Liebster award. Thank you!

(Funny how that blog button keeps changing. Apparently the rules have morphed over time as well.)

Normally, I just acknowledge these things and link an old award post, but I needed some blog content for July and I thought Caffe's questions were challenging, so I decided to go full monty. Figuratively speaking, of course. :P

Rules (according to Caffe’s post):

  1. Each nominee should link back to the person who nominated them.
  2. Answer the 10 questions which are given to you by the nominator.
  3. Nominate 5-11 other bloggers for this award who have less than 200 1000 400 followers.
  4. Create 10 questions for your nominees to answer.
  5. Let the nominees know that they have been nominated by going to their blog and notifying them.

The questions I got from Caffe:
Which fictional character do you most identify with and why?
It would be tough to narrow it down to just one. I tend to identify with shy-but-inwardly-strong female characters—people who hang back socially but suck it up and deal when the going gets tough. I enjoy reading about outgoing heroines, but I can’t relate to them.

In another life, what would you be doing, if not writing?
I DO have another life. I’m a nurse, a wife, and a mom. LOL
Heck, I don’t know. Probably working as a scientist of some sort.

Would you rather have a slow painful death by terminal disease or a quick death by accident?
Dang. You don’t pull any punches, do you?

Regardless, it’d be horrible; you either don’t get to say goodbye, or you and your loved ones suffer through an illness. *shrugs* I’d rather make a point of telling my family members I love them, often, and take what comes.

Your books are a big hit. Would you rather see it as a: (pick one only) movie, TV series, computer game, or a Broadway show? Why?
Movie. Come Back would lend itself best to that medium.
My other WIPs would, too.

Admit it, you already have a dream cast in mind. Who are they?
Actually, I don’t. I stay so busy writing, I don’t keep up with the stars anymore.

Any part(s) in your manuscript(s) you’ve been embarrassed to let your family/friends read?
That’s easy. The love scenes. *blush*

Was there ever a book you just couldn’t finish? Why not?
There have been a few. If I put down a book, it’s either because it didn’t hold my interest (typically a genre-related thing) or the writing is very, very bad. ...like my first attempts at fiction, before I bothered to learn anything about the craft. :P

What is the one thing you would never, ever let your characters do?
Hm. That’s a tough one. So much of it depends on context.

I guess I’d never let them do something heinous without getting punished or at least showing remorse.

What do you think is the most underrated book/movie?
I don’t watch movies much. As for books, there are lots of them. I often venture into the indie realm when shopping. I’ve read some excellent books—many of them better than those written by popular authors and / or published by well-known publishers.

Do you prefer happy endings or tragic ones? Why?
Happy endings, definitely.
Life has enough downers of its own.

Cathrina Constantine nominated me for the Sunshine Blogger Award.
Thanks, Cathrina!

I'm supposed to name my favorites.

Color: blue
Animal: dog
Time of day: morning
Food: Vietnamese egg rolls from Tay Do
Writing time: anytime I'm uninterrupted
Cookie: oatmeal raisin with nuts and spices - and soft, not crunchy
Movie/TV show: MASH
Genre: to read? Western Historical Romance.

Are you a dancer or a watcher?
Watcher! (unless no one is watching me. LOL)

Are you a day person or a night person?
I'm really a day/morning person deep down, but I get forced into being a night person two nights a week.

Friend and CP Loni Townsend
nominated me for The Versatile Blogger award. Thank you! I think Loni's a way more versatile blogger than I am. If you don't already follow her blog, you should. :)

Because I already answered so many questions for Maggie and Cathrina, I'll kindly spare you more Melissa Maygrove trivia. :P

I'm tripling up today, so I'm gonna bend the rules and skip the nominations.
*collective sigh of relief from the audience*
C'mon. Admit it. You'd rather be writing anyway. :P

Thanks for visiting. :)

  1. Wonderful answers, Mel, especially since you make your villains remorseful. Good life lessons. :) I've never understood the term "nominated" for this award. There's no nomination about it...it's already awarded! Lol. But you're certainly deserving of them all.

Nothing new at my place...just wanted to touch base and congratulate. You're awesome!

  2. Congrats on all of the awards.

And I enjoyed your answers. I have been occasionally embarrassed to let friends and family read love scenes, too.

Also, I love MASH. Such a fantastic show.

  3. Congratulations! Those were some tough questions. I don't have a cast in mind either.

  4. You're well deserving of the awards. And I think you're pretty darn versatile. Just look at all those details you listed!

Congrats! This was fun to read. :)

  5. Hah! You and I are running on the same brainwave. Seriously. Must be because of this last week. *high five*

I know what you mean about being squeamish when relatives read the love scenes... Well, it is what it is, right? =)

  6. Always nice to know more about you. I like the morning to read but I do my best writing at night when everyone else is in bed.
Nurses have a tough job. I admire you all.

  7. Congrats on your awards! "Go full monty"...giggle.

  8. That dying questions is a tough one. I think I'd like to say goodbye, too. Love scenes make me blush! I don't even want to know what my family would say. Which is why I write middle grade. At least for now it's safe.

  9. LOL!!! Thank you for skipping the nominations! It's so true. I'd much rather be writing :)

I'm selfishly glad you decided to post on these awards, though, because Caffe's questions really are great, and it was really interesting to read your answers and think about my own.

Oh, and go ahead and come up with your dream cast sometime. It's a dream, so it can be actors from the 1980s, if that's what you want :) It's a fun escape, and a pleasant diversion from life sometimes!

  10. Congrats on all the rewards and you had some great answers for your Liebster.

I'm the same way...I couldn't tell you who's hot in Hollywood, either.

  11. You don't watch movies? Okay, I'm hyperventilating. And I am definitely a morning person as well. Congrats on your awards!

  12. You're great at answering questions! That's an important talent for an author to have.

  13. Way to collect the awards! I got my sale copy of Come Back. I really wanted to read it on vacation, but never had the time. Can't wait to read it!!

  14. It's so cool that you're a nurse. The nicest people I know are nurses. And I must agree that happily-ever-afters are the best 'cause who needs more reality? :P

  15. Congrats on your awards! :) I enjoyed reading your answers.

  16. Congrats on your awards :). What fun Melissa trivia.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who doesn't have a "dream cast" in mind for their book. I never understood that.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yes, I'd rather be writing, but I was already thinking of answers in case you asked me questions. ^_^ I know what you mean about not having a dream cast, though - I've found that I can't work well with characters if I picture a real person playing them.

  18. Lots of awards this week! You and I can be dog people and eat soft oatmeal raisin cookies together. :)

  19. It's nice to learn more about you, and very nice of you to not tag anyone. Yes, we'd rather be writing, but we're likely on facebook instead. Smiles.

  20. What fun! I loved your answers! I really enjoy MASH too. I used to watch it with my dad when I was a kid.

  21. Hard questions, but you answered them well.

  22. I enjoyed reading your answers so I'm glad you decided to do this. =) Can definitely imagine Come Back as a movie! Was interesting to see you'd be a scientist if not your current other life lol.

  23. Congrats on the awards! Have a terrific weekend. :)

  24. Hey Melissa,

Yay, your wait for my eagerly waited comment is over.

    Great post! Thanks for sharing!

Look at you go with all those awards. I just love the Lobster Award or whatever it's called.

Neat responses, Melissa. When you have a dream cast finally in mind, I'm ready. LOL

Hope you had a nice weekend.

    Gary :)

  25. Great answers, Melissa. It was nice to learn you are a nurse and mother as well as an author. I would love to check out your book, Come Back, over the summer. I've been navigating around the blogosphere while snagging up novels for my summer reading list. You are absolutely right about finding books within the indie market that are actually very good=)

  26. You had me until you put raisins in your oatmeal cookies...

I posted for the same reason you did (award) for content! And it was still hard. :)
