Hunkered Down in Houston

Well, Katy, Texas, actually. A smaller city right on the western edge.

And I'm not exactly hunkered down. Only on my days off. Despite my county's 'stay-at-home' order, I can't. I'm a nurse, so that makes me an essential employee.

I wasn't sure what to post today, or even if I should. I decided to keep my promise to myself to blog at least monthly, despite the pandemic.

There's enough scary news bombarding us, so I'll keep it upbeat.

I'm healthy, and so is my family. We have been blessed far more than we deserve. I buy groceries in bulk, so we had plenty going into this crisis.

I'm a nurse, so I have work and a steady income. And I work in the NICU, so I'm in a safer environment than most.

My kids are grown, so I was not forced to suddenly homeschool or scramble to find childcare. Most of my coworkers are not so lucky.

I thank God every day for all of this.

For those of you who sew and want to do something to help, consider making surgical-type masks. I found a group on facebook, Covid-19 Maskmakers, where people are pooling information, patterns, and resources, and listing locations that have needs.

One suggestion if you do this: make the inside of the mask a different color from the outside, so healthcare workers can see at a glance which side goes back against their face.

Thanks for visiting. Stay calm and stay safe. We will get through this.

I work six of the next eight nights, so replies and return visits might be delayed.

  1. Glad you're not in a critical area and everyone is safe. My wife had just done the shopping before all this hit two weeks ago and since we were low on everything, really stocked up, so we are still good to go.

  2. Stay safe out there. You're on the front lines. We don't want anything happening to you (or anyone really).

  3. Stay safe. And keep good watch on those babies in your care. They need you.

  4. We are stocked too. I have had to make grocery runs because with six people in one house, we go through the food pretty fast and there are limits oo how many gallons of milk and eggs you can get at once.

I need to learn to sew. My cousins have been making masks and it would be nice to be able to do something useful like that.

  5. We have to count our blessings during this time.

I don't know how to sew either. I can fix a hole. Sort of.

  6. I can sew, but I don't have good material on hand for the project and have been trying my best to adhere to the stay-at-home order given by Idaho's Governor. I need to make my mom one. She just started chemo and she's 65 years old. I should call Joann's to see if they're open.
