July 6th Question: If you could live in any book world, which one would you choose.

The first book that came to mind was Little House on the Prairie. I grew up watching that show, and I've always felt like I was born a century too late. Funny thing, though...I recently found the series on a free streaming channel and watched it again. Life back then wasn't as rosy as I remember.

Books often romanticize times gone by. Regardless of what we tell ourselves, each setting and decade has its challenges. I would choose a simpler, farm-like life in the 1800s...if I could take along some penicillin and my A/C.

###

Small win last month...
A couple of weeks after releasing Fool's Iron, I put my western series into KU. I had resisted doing it for a long time because of the low payout, but I'm glad I did. It didn't hurt my e-book sales like I thought it would. It only added to my royalties.

Little by little, I'm reviving my author biz. :)

###

A friend has a new book.
Elizabeth Seckman just released About Her: A Second Chance Romance.

Liz is known for writing imperfect characters and awesome dialogue, and she bested herself in About Her. I blew through this well-paced story and loved every minute of it. I kid you not - I laughed so hard in places I nearly peed myself.

I joked with Liz that a couple of the scenes could have taken place on the lakeside couch in Ozark. Don't read if you can't handle dysfunctional families, snark, and a touch of profanity.

You can pick up a copy at Amazon or Smashwords

Do it. You won't regret it.

IWSG is the brainchild of Alex J. Cavanaugh. It's a monthly bloghop that offers a safe haven for writers to express their feelings and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. It's also a venue for offering  support, both in the form of comments and positive posts. Writers of all kinds are welcome.

We 'meet' the first Wednesday of every month. If you're interested in learning more, click on the link above. And don't be intimidated by the size of the group. We're not expected to visit everyone on the list

  1. You aren't the first I've encountered today going with the Little House on the Prairie world.
Nice book recommendations you've offered up too.
For the IWSG July prompt asking which book world I would live in, I narrowed it down to three choices.
One is a short-story I published. One is from a popular series. And one is better known from television, but there are books. It's all on my blog.
Today's Google Doodle g.co/doodle/5m9rrry This is a tribute to Charlie Hill of the Oneida Nation, the first Native American stand-up comedian to be on a nationally broadcast television show.
Over at Operation Awesome, our Pass or Pages query contest is open this week with July's family saga genre. Know any writers who might want to enter?

  2. Congratulations to Elizabeth!
Life was much rougher back then. You got hurt, you could easily die.

  3. I could live on a prairie but maybe not so far back. Like Alex said, getting hurt was life threatening. :/

  4. Grats Elizabeth!

I thought about living in historical settings, but yeah, I think I like my modern niceties, like indoor plumbing, hot showers, and dishwashers.

Glad to hear the authoring is back on the rise!

  5. I've been curious about Kindle Unlimited but never tried it.

    Congrats to Elizabeth.

  6. Another Little House fan! That's what I wrote about too. :) I totally agree that we tend to fantasize it a bit. I like my A/C and although I love to garden, wouldn't want to depend on having to grow all my own food.
Very cool that your book is doing well in KU!

  7. I've always been fond of the US in the mid-eighteen hundreds, but, like you, I'd like a few comforts along with me.

I'm glad you're energizing your book business. I should get on that horse.

  8. If I could take modern medicine with me, make it portable and personal, so to speak, I'd choose to live in a fantasy world with magic and horses. Dragons are optional.
    I'm Olga Godim from https://olgagodim.wordpress.com - #34 on the IWSG list. Can't sign-in. :(

  9. I read the Little House on the Prairie books as a child and even then was astonished at how hard life was for the pioneers. The television series did not capture the privation present in the books at all.

  10. The old west sounds romantic until you realize it's outhouses, dying in childbirth, and no AC. Forget that. (I thought I commenter before. Strange.)

  11. Congrats on your release and may your books roll in new success! Congrats to Elizabeth, too. As to Little House, we live just one town over from Laura and Alfonso's house...and I'm looking forward to moving away for cooler summers, and less poisonous bugs and snakes. But it is beautiful here!
