Blurbs - What They Are & How To Write Them

Okay, so I'm a little late with this week's post. What can I say. Wednesday snuck up on me.

At some point in your writing career, you will probably have to write a blurb. You know - the paragraph or two on the back of a book that tells a little about the story and, hopefully, entices people to buy it and read it.
  • A good blurb doesn’t tell much of the story, and it shouldn't be a total spoiler.
  • It introduces your protagonist (or hero and heroine in a romance) and the major conflict.
  • Keep it brief, but make it strong — every word counts.
  • It should leave the reader wanting more.
Here are a few good links on writing blurbs. Enjoy. = )

  2. Thanks so much for these links! I'm always looking for help on how to condense an entire novel into a smaller summary. It's so difficult to do when we are completely involved and aware of the story as the writer. It took me months to do a synopsis because I needed the space of time to separate me from the work.

    1. You're welcome, and I totally agree. It's like we know too much, and that makes it so hard to condense. Thanks for stopping by. = )

    1. I've read more than once the suggestion to write the blurb (or log line), and even the synopsis of the novel first, just to get organized and focused - then to go back and tweak it if needed after your done with the ms. I wrote a (lame - LOL) blurb for 'Come Back' when I submitted the first couple of chapters to a large crit group I belong to, but I've yet to write a synopsis. Those intimidate me.

Glad you stopped by. = )
